Australia: Darwin

Our first destination in Australia was Darwin, we flew from Singapore to there in the early hours of the morning being welcomed by Australian customs, which was exactly like an episode of passport control; completely strict and most items having to be declared which was fun after having no sleep! Luckily enough after a bag inspection everything was good and with no items confiscated we made it through immigration!

We arrived right at the end of the 'wet season' in Darwin so everywhere was amazingly quiet, apparently the population increases by thousands during the 'dry season' when loads of people come to work.  This also meant that some things were closed that we wanted to do but we had a great time walking around all the different bays and beaches and chilled out at their "jellyfish safe" lagoon, enjoying the intense heat and sunshine.

Our main highlight was our day out on a crocodile cruise and touring round Litchfield national park! We left early in the morning out of Darwin to make our way to the national park on the way we stopped at one of the rivers and joined in on a crocodile cruise.  First though we both got to hold a massive snake!  We then boarded a boat where they dangled meat off the side attracting crocodiles.  This was really interesting watching the crocodiles track down the food and prepare to 'jump' out of the water to catch it!  After this we went on to the national park.
Our first stop was at the termite mounds, which were huge!  Apparently it takes about a decade for the termites to build a metre of their home and some were at least 3 metres high!  We then went on to see some waterfalls which were incredible.  One which was called Florence falls we were able to swim in!  We then went on to a place called 'Buckley holes' which were like rapids! and you could go in the different pools !  I was too scared to try and slide down from one to the other because the current was pretty strong but Pete managed too! We also got to see a massive waterfall that was unsafe for swimming becasue of crocs but had hundreds of large bats which was a bit unerving  whilst at  the same time quite cool!
After a few more days relaxing we caught our flight to Cairns to start our east coast travels!
